The Astra Grading System

The Astra Grading System is a rigorous, honest framework that goes beyond vague descriptors like "good condition" or "light use." Each camera we handle is evaluated across optics, mechanics, cosmetics, and electronics, then assigned a grade.

How It Works

  • Step 1 — Physical Inspection

    Body, seals, leatherette, dials, and all mechanical components are examined under controlled lighting for wear, damage, and integrity. Previous owner and repair history are reviewed where available.

  • Step 2 — Optics Testing

    Lenses are inspected element by element for fungus, haze, balsam separation, coating wear, and overall optical condition. Aperture blades are checked for oil and smooth operation.

  • Step 3 — Mechanical Testing

    hutter speeds are tested across all settings for accuracy and consistency. Light seals are assessed for deterioration, compression, and effectiveness. Internal mechanical condition — including film transport, mirror box, and wind mechanism — is fully verified.

  • Step 4 — Film Test

    Where possible, a film test is conducted to confirm real-world performance. This remains our most definitive measure of a camera's true condition.

  • Step 4 — Electronics Testing

    Electronic functions are verified where applicable. For analog cameras we test the lightmeter, shutter, rewind functions etc.. For a digital camera we check the sensor, shutter, connectivity and all applicable electronic functions.

  • ★★★★★ Astra Absolute

    Tier: Pinnacle

    Pristine cameras with no visible wear. Fully functional with perfect optics.

  • ★★★★ Astra Excellent

    Tier: Excellent

    Minimal signs of use. All functions work perfectly with excellent optics.

  • ★★★ Astra Good

    Tier: Very Good

    Light wear visible. All functions work properly with good optical quality.

  • ★★ Astra Tested

    Tier: Good

    Worn, but working. Tested cameras with significant cosmetic marks and higher shutter counts.

  • ★ Astra Honest

    Tier: Fair

    Cameras have notable faults - cosmetic, mechanical, or both. They work, but with caveats. Ideal for parts.

  • Dark Matter

    Tier: Ungraded

    These cameras haven't yet passed through our process — origin unknown, condition unverified.
